Foreign landscapes and faces from a time between the worlds. Old photographies, which were supposed to display reality once, blend with new forms that render the image surreal.
Supernatural faces grow like plants out of existing elements, wind around persons in the pictures and let them appear in a new shape. Aura arises in the sceneries as nebulous layers. From some of them emerge strange creatures.
For his series „Of Unknown Origin“, Johannes Schebler works mostly with black and white or sepia photographies in small formats. Basic themes are wide panoramas or portraits, which are covered with acrylic and various (coloured) pencils. Minimalistic geometrical forms, a few strokes and consciously placed scratches, transform the appearance of the original photography. In other images delicately drawn waves or coloured areas create a new reality.
The anonymous character is pointed out by using roman numerals as title for the pieces, which also let the series resemble to archived artefacts of unknown origin.
